Salmonella-Tainted Veggie Booty Snacks Recalled

At least 50 people who ate Veggie Booty snack food contracted salmonella which prompted a widespread recall of the puffed rice and corn snack.

Veggie Booty, a snack popular among small children, may be poisoned with Salmonella and should be thrown out, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said.

At least 50 people who ate Veggie Booty snack food contracted salmonella which prompted a widespread recall of the puffed rice and corn snack.

"Almost all the illnesses have occurred in children under 10 years old, with the most cases in toddlers. Most persons had reported bloody diarrhea; four were hospitalized," the FDA said in a statement.

Georgine Hertzwig, of Robert's American Gourmet, which manufactures Veggie Booty, said none of its products has tested positive for salmonella, which often leads to symptoms of fever and diarrhea.

Salmonella infection usually causes diarrhea, often bloody, with abdominal cramps and fever. It can be life-threatening in infants, persons with poor underlying health and those with weakened immune systems.

The company will temporarily stop selling the snack as a precaution.
